The Crane Library, Quincy, MA
The Crane Library was designed by H.H. Richardson in collaboration with Frederick Law Olmsted who designed the grounds in 1882. The main library was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987, recognizing it as one of Richardson's finest library buildings. We were asked to assess chronic leaking in the walls and to recommend repairs.
We found holes in the copper gutters which were original to the building. Water was leaking into the top of the walls which caused staining. The copper was repaired to match the existing and, where necessary, slate was salvaged. When the slate could not be salvaged, additional red slate was obtained to match in dimension, thickness, texture.
