Quincy Historical Society, Quincy, MA

Formerly the Adams Academy, established by John Quincy Adams in 1872, the building now houses the Quincy Historic Society.

Our initial task was to perform a study to understand the condition of the building so we could make recommendations. The geometry of the roof led water to collect in four places overwhelming the scupper system and causing leaks. Also, the copper was original to the building and was highly deteriorated.

We replaced the copper valley flashing and increased the size of the collection boxes with appropriately sized downspouts for the proper flow. New modern waterproofing underlayment increased the lifespan of the copper/roof system, and we recommended the associated repairs to the flat roof, masonry, windows, and entrance canopy. We also recommended removal of the ivy from the walls to maintain the “health” of the masonry.
