Radcliffe Green Fence, Radcliffe Institute, Cambridge, MA

The masonry walls and wrought iron fencing surrounding the Radcliffe Green are predominately solid brick and there are eight individual entrances which are a combination of wrought iron and granite.

Restoration of the entire assembly required an evaluation with recommendations to the Owner regarding repair options. Most of the brick masonry required pointing and cleaning. Extreme care was taken to provide mockups for approval by Cambridge Historic Commission. The mortar needed to appear maintained and not new. This required the masons to treat each mortar joint to expose the aggregate. Various entrances required individual solutions, the most severe of which had granite steps that had displaced. The granite was carefully removed, the concrete foundations repaired, and the granite slabs were reinstalled with a slight pitch so water could shed.
