Smith Tavern, Weston, MA

Built in 1757 and visited by George Washington during the revolutionary war, the Smith Tavern is one of the most important historical structures in the country. It has had various uses over the years and contains a meeting space that was not up to code. A new egress stair was required to so that they could continue to use the space and, because there was no room on the interior, we designed a new modern stair, located at the rear of the building which could not be seen from the street.

We also specified the preparation and painting of the entire historic building which contained leaded paint. During the process many of the original exterior clapboards were found to be deteriorated and required replacement. We fabricated new cedar clapboards to match the existing in scale and texture. We also specified that they be installed using historic techniques and historic fasteners, also to match the existing.
