St. Marks Church Condominiums, Brookline, MA
Saint Marks Methodist Church was dedicated in 1896 and is constructed of Brighton ledge stone also known as "putting stone" with Nova Scotia sandstone trim and it closed in 1968. Because of lack of maintenance, the building suffered from leaks due to (the original) deteriorated copper roof flashing and open mortar joints. The building had been renovated into condominiums incorporating many of the beautiful interior church details within each unit which became highly coveted in the area. But the price tag for the repairs was going to be high. We provided multiple options with extensive cost estimates so that the Trustees could choose the best option. The trustees chose full restoration, the cost of which was recouped immediately with increased real estate values.
Repairs included complete replacement of the existing copper valleys, ridges, base flashing, gutters, and trim at the slate roof. Extensive masonry repairs included grouting of the interior wall structure due to deteriorated mortar, masonry anchors at critical structural locations, resetting of stones, and full deep pointing between the exterior stones crafted to shed water and protect the interior.
